Course Description

This Ethics & Professionalism course, approved by the Medical Board of California, is designed for medical and legal professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and attorneys. This course employs various teaching methods, including lectures, case studies, and discussions, to provide a comprehensive understanding of medical ethics and professionalism. It covers fundamental ethical principles, differentiates ethics from legal matters, addresses consequences of unethical behavior, and explores ethical issues in patient care, including confidentiality, informed consent, and end-of-life considerations. Additionally, it examines interprofessional relationships, healthcare financing ethics, and medical professionalism, ensuing participants leave with a comprehensive grasp of ethical principles in healthcare delivery.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this CME-approved activity, participants will be better able to:

·  Distinguish ethical behavior from legal behavior and understand how they may relate to each other

·  Discriminate legal and non-legal consequences of unethical behavior

·  Recognize ethical responsibilities of physicians towards patients

·  Evaluate ethical issues of consent, confidentiality, and care of patients at the end of life

·  Articulate special ethical problems related to adults, minors, and those who are unrepresented

·  Understand the significance of ethical interprofessional relationships

·  Employ ethics in financing of health care delivery

Needs Assessment

Medical ethics and medical professionalism are crucial for patient care, relationships with colleagues, and institutional behavior. Unfortunately, these topics are often underemphasized in medical and nursing education, leaving healthcare practitioners with insufficient ethical grounding and a limited understanding of the the consequences of unethical behavior. This knowledge gap can lead to serious repercussions, including disciplinary actions, legal disputes, and licensing issues. A solid foundation in ethics and professionalism not only enhances clinical decision-making and professional interactions, but also reduces  professional liability. This program addresses this deficiency by offering practical tools to integrate ethical behavior into one’s clinical practice, bridging the gap in ethical training.
